The Nature of Loss

2013, Mixed Media

The Nature of Loss is an exercise in practice, patience, and letting go. Based on the sudden desolation of a home after a fire, this installation is representative of  the start of my life after college and the beginning of something new. A two story house is shown inside the red dresser, meticulously created, painted, and designed. This was created days after my graduation and once completed was burned in an act of defiance for the arts and crafts vs the fine arts culture that we are pressured to conform to in art school. Fire, in nature, brings about new growth. While snow, which is represented by television, is a symbol of death. While this piece is quiet and subtle, made over weeks, it was gone in minutes, creating a cleansing experience for myself and the viewer.
